Scotties like Sadie, the puppy, who have black hair coats also seem to have coal black noses. We wheaten colored Scotties had black noses as puppies, but over time, they have all faded to a brownish color.
Nine year old Sunny has the lightest colored nose of any of us. It almost has a pinkish tinge to it, whereas Molly’s and my noses are brown, but around the edges, our noses are still black. Unfortunately, the older we get, the less black will remain because the enzyme that produces pigmentation won’t produce as much color as we age.
Our brown noses do darken a little from exposure to the sun. If we were strictly outside dogs, we’d probably be using sunscreen to protect our noses, but since we are living the good life in our house and we don’t spend that much time in our backyard, we will continue to enjoy our lives as brown nosers and just keep sniffin’!
