The Nightmare Schedule

A few years ago, when Wen adopted Frosty, she had quite a dilemma, since she already had two Scotties (Kirby and Sunny) living in her one bedroom apartment that had a two dog limit.  The plus side was:  giving a great little Scottie a new home.  The minus side was:  how she would do it (without getting caught)!

The process was actually more than a little complicated.  All of her neighbors had seen Wen’s two wheaten Scotties and were used to seeing her walk them several times a day.  The people in the neighboring apartments seemed nice, but all of them were capable of  informing the management if they suddenly saw dog number three, so a new routine was necessary.

Wen developed a complicated early morning schedule where she would feed Frosty, walk Kirby and Sunny, bring them back into the apartment and feed them, walk Frosty and put her in her crate in the car, get ready for work, and then leave for work with her two regular dogs.

All three Scotties would hang out at the animal clinic where Wen worked and at lunchtime, she would take either one or two dogs home, leaving whomever was left at work until closing time, when they would all go home.

At night, it was the same kind of schedule:  eating and walking in shifts so that there were never more than two dogs outside at a time.

This crazy schedule went on for several years and the only glitch was when it was snowing and really cold outside.  Wen didn’t want to leave Frosty freezing in her crate in the car early in the morning while she got ready for work, even though she had insulated dog coats and blankets, so she would bring her back inside after her walk and then sneak Frosty out to the car under her coat after she had taken the other two dogs out to the car.

As far as Wen was concerned, all of the hassle was worth it because Frosty was a wonderful dog and she got along perfectly with Kirby and Sunny.  None of her neighbors ever suspected that there was an extra dog until the day that Wen and the Scotties moved out.  Wen was walking Frosty to the car when she ran into her friend from the next building.  He took one look at Frosty and asked “is that a new one?  Do you have three of them?”

Wen just laughed and said “maybe” and her friend laughed too!  The crazy nightmare schedule had worked, all was good, and she and her three Scotties were off to their new home.
