Years ago, when they lived in Texas, Wen came home from a shopping excursion and her husband looked up from his yard work and asked, “Do you want the good news first or the bad news?”
With apprehension, Wen said, “the good news” and it turned out that the good news was: all three dogs were in the house. Wen had a sinking feeling as she asked, “and what’s the bad news?”
Her husband admitted that that while he was cutting the grass, he realized that he had left the gate open to their fenced backyard and since the dogs had free access to the backyard through their dog door, when he went to check on them, all three were missing!
Wen was really relieved that all three dogs were back home, but what exactly had happened?
Evidently, Casey, the male Scottie, had just walked around to the front yard where he was found by the front door. The two girls, however, were nowhere to be seen, so Wen’s husband jumped in the car and drove around the neighborhood.
Buffy, the Cocker Spaniel, had wandered up the street and he collected her from a yard at the end of their very long block.
There was no sign of Poo, the female Scottie, so he kept driving. Eventually, he spotted her playing with some kids on the playground of the neighborhood elementery school, which was several long blocks away from home, so she had gone for a nice run!
He brought the two girls home and made very sure that the fence gate was closed. Thank goodness all three dogs were okay, because he had really blown it by leaving the gate open and if anything had happened to any of the dogs, Wen would never have forgiven him!
Fortunately, there was a happy ending to the story, but Wen made sure that she kept a close eye on the gate from then on!
