It’s August 1, also known as DOGust 1st, the universal birthday for shelter dogs. Since most shelter dogs’ birthdays are unknown, today is the day that has been designated the special day to celebrate them.
Adopting a dog from a shelter gives that dog a new home, a fresh start, and a new lease on life and our family’s one and only adopted shelter dog, Frosty, was very appreciative. She had been in two different shelters before Wen spotted her in a cage at Petsmart, waiting to see if anyone would want to give her a home and she didn’t even look like a Scottie with her bad haircut. As a matter of fact, her breed was listed as Cairn/ Westie mix, but Wen, a seasoned Scottie owner, knew a Scottie when she saw one and after no one had adopted the shy little wheaten-colored dog and the shelter person was due to pick her up, Wen filled out adoption papers and took her home.
Wen chose the name “Frosty” because she had named her first wheaten Scottie “Frosty” and it just seemed like the perfect thing to do. The newly named Frosty got along perfectly with Wen’s two wheaten Scotties, Kirby and Sunny and she flourished in her new home. As time went on and with grooming from a master groomer, Frosty looked like the Scottie she was. The three wheaten Scotties were quite the happy trio and Wen never regretted bringing the shy little shelter dog with the bad haircut home.
So Happy Birthday to all the shelter dogs on your special day and here’s hoping that each and every one of you gets a happy new home!
