Traffic Patterns

Every time it snows, we Scotties go out in our backyard and create traffic patterns by plowing paths around the yard. Unless the snow is too deep (We ARE kind of short, you know.) and Wen has to shovel paths for us, we normally plow one big circle with a couple of intersections.

Who is the main snowplower? That would be me, because I am the most adventurous and being the only male, the biggest of our crew. Little Sadie sometimes hops her way through the snow, but Molly usually follows in my tracks. After few times around the yard though, we create our own Scottie traffic patterns to serve us until the snow melts.

Don’t stop! Keep moving!

Deep Thoughts

Sometimes we Scotties have deep thoughts, just like humans do. We can stop and ponder important issues too. Okay, our thoughts may not be important ground-breaking thoughts to people, but to us canines, they’re pretty darn deep!

I’m thinking, i’m thinking!

Another Grooming Day

Yesterday, Wen loaded us Scotties into the car and we went to visit our groomer, Gigi to get beautified. In a matter of a few hours we went from scruffy to stylin’ and later, when Wen picked us up, Gigi told her to check Facebook, because we were featured on Gigi’s page as the “face of the day.”

Yep, Gigi took our picture and Wen was excited to see it, because she has always wondered how we behave when we get groomed. Wen knew that Gigi always keeps us three together, away from other dogs (We ARE terriers, you know!) because we are happier that way and from the picture she could see our nice hairdos. She could also see that Molly and Sadie looked a little excited and stressed with their tongues hanging out, plus Molly was sitting straight up on her rear legs, which she very rarely does. As for me, I was looking my usual serious self, because I am Mister Chill and it takes a lot to get me all excited.

Anyway, Wen had a little glimpse into how we react to being in a space with tons of other dogs of all shapes and sizes and lots of bathing and grooming activity and it’s no surprise that when we get home from another grooming day, the three of us typically crash on the couch for a big snooze after all the excitement.

Still More Snow….

We Scotties woke up to below zero temperatures again this morning and still more snow. Is this stuff ever going to end? Okay, it’s true that we love snow and we have a lot of fun exploring our yard, but this is getting ridiculous and the frigid temperatures are freezing our feet and making us limp around the yard until Wen rescues us.

I think that we’re spending more time in front of the fireplace than anywhere else lately, because every time we come in from our short stints outside, Sadie and I hit the dog beds by the fireplace and Molly snuggles up on blankets on the couch. We Scotties know how to warm up after visiting the arctic zone, but honestly, we’re ready for a serious warm up and snow melt! It’s been a long time since we’ve seen actual grass in our yard!

“The Ice Chompers”

The frigid zone is back and it’s three degrees outside right now. We got about an inch of snow overnight and while Wen was clearing off the deck early this morning, we Scotties were out and about in the yard.

When it’s cold like this and the snow on the ground keeps freezing and refreezing, we can find pieces of ice to chew on and we do love chomping on ice! It doesn’t matter whether Wen tosses pristine ice cubes from the freezer to us or we find chunks of ice outside on the ground. Ice is ice and it’s fun to gnaw on. Just call us “the ice chompers!”

Molly, a pro ice chomper

That Thing with the Prongs

We Scotties got something new and we’re not really sure what it is, but it’s fun, especially when Wen puts mini Milk-bones on it. Sure, we have to outsmart the thing in order to get the Milk-bones out, but it’s a challenge that we’re definitely up for.

Okay, the new thing is a slow feeder with plastic prongs all over it so dogs who eat too fast are forced to slow down and pick pieces of food out from between the prongs. We’re not using it as a slow feeder though. To us it’s a toy that we slide around the floor as we all try to pick out Milk-bones and believe me, the competition is fierce!

What usually happens though is that Molly gives up first while Sadie and I push the thing across the floor, attacking it, trying to eat the most treats. Then Wen feels sorry for Molly and she tosses extra treats to her while Sadie and I are frantically trying to extract Milk-bones. Yeah, Molly is probably outsmarting us, but we sure have fun chasing that plastic thing with the prongs—at least until we’ve eaten all the treats!

Pleased and Proud

The other day, Wen was perusing the Furever Friends Photography site online and as she was watching a carousel of photos, who popped up? Me!

Yes, Kris Phillips of Furever Friends was my amazing photographer last month when I modeled Up Country Inc. products for their 2023 catalog and Kris must have really liked her shot of me with a panoramic view of the front range of the Rocky Mountains in the background, so she added it to her website photos.

What a nice surprise to find my photo on her website and we’re so pleased and proud that it’s included with her incredible dog photos, because she is an expert at photographing dogs. Unfortunately, Kris is moving to Idaho, so she won’t be available in the Denver area anymore, but we are so grateful for the wonderful photo shoot we had with her and her stunning photos that are permanent memories of our photo shoot adventure!

A Christmas Gift

Wen received a Christmas gift from a friend at their Scottie club meeting the other day and among the Scottie goodies in the package was a bandanna for me! The lady told Wen that she thought of me when she saw the cute bandanna. I wonder why?

Maybe it’s because I’m the only Scottie she knows who tolerates posting pictures online in costumes with all kinds of silly props (Yeah, for a burly Scottie guy, I put up with a lot, just to please Wen!) and maybe she thought I’d appreciate a new look with a cute bandanna (I do like presents!).

Anyway, the bandanna is a nice one with a cool paw print pattern and we appreciate the thought! With all my coats and hats and sweaters and stuff, I’m going to need my own closet pretty soon!

Let’s Go Outside!

Not everyone has the luxury of a doggie door, so When we dogs want to go outside, we have a variety of ways of letting family members know to let us out. Some dogs run to the door or whine or bark or paw at their people. Others anxiously pace around the room until their owners notice and let them out. Still others look at their owners with a very meaningful stare and some dogs are even taught to ring a bell to go outside. Serious sniffing around the floor is another obvious sign that it’s time to go outside.

No matter what the signs or signals are, be sure to pay attention and let us out or take us for a nice walk. That way the house can be an accident free zone!

“Riley, are you hinting to go outside?”

More White Stuff

Yep, once again we have a winter wonderland in our yard. Just as the snow was melting from the previous storm and we Scotties were back to walking on some patches of grass, another 8-9 inches of snow dumped on us. We haven’t had access to our usual snooping territory for quite awhile because of all the white stuff that has fallen and now we will have to plow some new paths.

The squirrels that like to tease us by running across the top of our fence are out of luck once again because the fence has a good four inches of snow piled on top. They’ll be back chattering at us soon enough though.

At this point, we Scotties can’t even make it across our yard, so we need to get busy and do some exploring before we get even more white stuff and wouldn’t you know, right now, more is in the forecast!
