About a year after Kirby had completed his basic obedience class, Wen decided to enroll him in a novice AKC Rally obedience class. She thought that it would be fun to sharpen their skills and learn to compete with Kirby as a team by completing courses with stations of performance commands.
As per usual, Kirby was one of two small dogs in a class of many larger dogs, but he made up for his lack of size with Scottie attitude.
One night in class when their trainer began to give instructions, Kirby began to speak also with a silly growly voice which the other dog owners found hilarious. Wen was totally mortified, so she shushed Kirby as he sat at her side like a perfect gentleman while everyone laughed.
Once again, the trainer started to speak and so did Kirby, followed by more laughter from the other dog owners. Evidently, Kirby thought that what he had to say was just as important (or more important) than what the trainer had to say, so he simply spoke up—over and over.
Wen eventually got Kirby to quiet down and the trainer was able to continue her instructions without interruption, but Kirby definitely seemed to feel that he was quite entertaining and the star of the show that night.
Kirby was such a beautiful dog and it is amazing how he would speak up at the Obedience class. Scotties are strong-willed and aklwlays the last of the class to obey orders.
RIP, Kirby
Yes, we all miss Kirby (except Molly, who came along after he was gone). He will always be mom’s favorite, but I’m working on that!!!
